CAN performing “Vernal Equinox” Live on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975 CAN is one of music’s biggest experimental bands and simply labeling them as “Krautrock” should be a crime. If one were to genuinely pay attention to their sound, you’d notice that what they’re doing in reality defies logic and expectations as they’re operating far away from the rules and boundaries of “Krautrock”. To understand their sound, one must first understand where this sound comes from. The source can be traced to the band merging musical elements found in the repetitive, rhythmic style they championed, which was found in North African music, Stockhausen, and American minimalists such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley. However, the brilliance of CAN lies in how they absorbed these ideas and transformed them into something primal, hypnotic, and physical. Despite their distinctive influences, every member locks into the same rhythmic pulse, which strengthens the band’s repetitive instincts until the music slowly pull the listener deeper into the composition. #Music #CAN
