Around 100 patients watched alongside a handful of punks, all under the supervision of hospital staff. It sounded like a recipe for disaster, but the idea came from Bay Area writer, DJ and promoter Howie Klein. Klein brought in The Mutants and The Cramps and invited Joe Rees of Target Video to document the show. The Mutants opened the show, and before long, patients and punks were dancing and pogoing together. By the end of their set, the audience had even made its way onto the stage. Then The Cramps took the stage. “We’re the Cramps, and we’re from New York City, and we drove 3,000 miles to play for you people,” Lux Interior told the crowd. “And somebody told me you people are crazy, but I’m not so sure about that. You seem to be all right to me.” There was no clear distinction between the band and the hospital’s patients. Everyone was simply part of the show. Thanks to Target Video, the concert was preserved on video and can still be seen today. Joe Rees filmed around 20 minutes of The Cramps’ set using a Sony Portapak camera. The black-and-white footage captured patients living out their rockstar dreams on Lux’s microphone, while punks and patients blurred together in the crowd. The footage was later released on VHS.
