In Penelope Spheeris’s 1983 cult-classic punk film Suburbia, the band T.S.O.L. famously appears as themselves. The band performs their songs “Wash Away” and “Darker My Love” live during a crucial club scene, serving as a raw, energetic focal point for the film’s disaffected runaway characters. Formed in 1978 in Long Beach, California, T.S.O.L.(True Sounds of Liberty) is a pioneering punk and deathrock band. Known for blending hardcore energy with gothic imagery, the classic lineup with vocalist Jack Grisham, guitarist Ron Emory, bassist Mike Roche, and drummer Todd Barnes. After a self-titled EP in 1981 that featured politically charged, fast-paced hardcore tracks like “Abolish Government” and “Superficial Love”, the band quickly pivoted to a darker, deathrock sound. Their 1981 debut full-length album, Dance with Me, is highly regarded as one of the very first American horror-punk/gothic records. Internal tensions and shifting musical tastes led Grisham and Barnes to depart the group in 1983. The band continued under the leadership of Emory and Roche, bringing in vocalist/guitarist Joe Wood and drummer Mitch Dean. Throughout the remainder of the 1980s, T.S.O.L. transitioned away from punk toward hard rock and glam metal. By the end of the decade, Emory and Roche had left as well, leaving no original members in the touring lineup. In the 1990s, the original members briefly reunited to play shows, but they found themselves unable to use the T.S.O.L. name legally because Wood and Dean controlled the rights. The original members eventually regained control of their band name in 1999. Tragically, founding drummer Todd Barnes died of a brain aneurysm that same year. Despite this, Grisham, Emory, and Roche regrouped, adding keyboardist Greg Kuehn and drummer Anthony Biuso. They returned to the road and released a string of new records, including 2017’s The Trigger Complex. The band continued performing and touring until officially wrapping up their nearly five-decade run at the start of 2026. #RockinnBonesRadio #TSOL #socalpunkrock #suburbia
